West Ham United travelled to the Etihad Stadium to face defending champions Manchester City on Matchday 13 of the 2021-22 Premier League season. The game ended in a 2-1 victory for The Citizens, as everyone expected. Ilkay Gundogan gave them the lead after playing for half an hour, kept the lead for most of the game, and even extended it to 2-0 in the 90th minute. The Hammers were able to get back a goal late in stoppage time to get some consolation, but nothing more.

Manchester City dominated the game against the Hammers with 69% ball possession, taking a total of 17 shots, out of which seven were on target. They created an xG of 2.50 in the match. West Ham United generated an xG of just 0.21, with just four shots on goal. They were more clinical, as they hit the target thrice and also scored one goal in the dying moments of the game.
Gundogan had the highest individual xG in the game of 1.12 and also took four shots, the most in the game. Raheem Sterling had the most dribbles, while Kyle Walker had the most passes into the final third, as Man City players dominated almost all the stats. Soucek did win the most aerial duels in the match.
The Hammers’ shot map shows that they were not allowed to take any shots from inside the penalty area. Their opponents were highly organized, not allowing David Moyes’ men to take more than four shots – all from outside the box.
The xT and xG generation timelines of the match show the progression of the game in terms of threats and expected goals. The xT generation shows that both teams were trying to create opportunities throughout the 90 minutes. But, it was Pep Guardiola’s team, who had very high xG creation as compared to their opponents.

Pablo Fornals had the highest xT creation from his passing in the game, followed by Arthur Masuaku. In terms of xT creation from dribbling, the highest xT was created by Michail Antonio, followed by Said Benrahma.
The Hammers were able to win more than 60% of the defensive duels, as they had to defend a lot in the game. Pablo Fornals was their best player going forward and even won the most defensive duels for them.
West Ham United were able to make around 50% successful loose ball recoveries in the game. Declan Rice and Pablo Fornals both won three loose ball duels each for the Hammers.
The victory saw Man City move up to second place in this season’s Premier League standings with 29 points from their 13 games. Pep Guardiola’s men are now one point behind leaders Chelsea and one ahead of third-placed Liverpool. Their opponents on the day, West Ham, are in fourth place with 23 points. The Hammers are looking strong and will be hoping to keep their top-four spot, with a lot of pressure from numerous other teams in the race for Champions League qualification. Only five points separate fourth-placed West Ham and 10th placed Leicester City, with Arsenal, Wolves, Tottenham, Man United and Brighton all in contention for the highly wanted fourth spot.
